A pioneering planned community, Leisure World of Maryland is sited on 610-acres. The community is accessed via three entrances with staffed gatehouses. Our main gate is located off Georgia Avenue.

As shown on our community map, Leisure World is a sprawling development of lush landscaping and meandering walking trails. At the center, high-rise condominium buildings surround an 18-hole championship golf course, boasting endless views of majestic greens, clusters of trees, and ponds and lakes. Neighborhoods with lower-profile homes, including townhomes, patio homes, low-rise condominium buildings and single family homes, are found around the perimeter of our community.

Conveniently located throughout the property, our clubhouses and related amenities, Administration building, and MedStar Health medical center are adjacent to Leisure World Boulevard, the main 3.2-mile thoroughfare that encircles our community.

Indoors and outdoors, there is plenty to do close to home. Residents enjoy countless amenities and services, and the natural beauty and serenity of 610 acres of majestic landscapes.

Our community is home to a vibrant mix of more than 8,000 residents—entrepreneurs, volunteers, proud grandparents, and world travelers.

A significant number of residents worked in local, state, and federal government, the international sector, or area universities. We also have a healthy representation of business owners and military veterans. The population is diverse —some remain focused on their careers, while many are long retired.

Rosemary Banda recently moved from Massachusetts to be near her daughter who lives in Washington and is starting a family. “She wanted us to come help out with the babies. Leisure World was recommended by my daughter. She felt that it would be the best place,” Rosemary said. “It’s safe and it’s lovely.”

Lee Jones initially rented at Leisure World, living at Creekside for two years before buying a home in The Greens.

For the convenience and his health, Charles Stewart chose Leisure World. “My knees are going bad, so I do water aerobics. My wife and I are both enjoying the heck out if it,” he said.

“I left New York City and moved directly to Leisure World,” said Angel Griffith, a mental health professional. She makes edible art—decorated cake pops in creative displays—that attracted a lot of interest at our recent community flea market. Angel said she is looking forward to sharing her art “while meeting and making many new friends.”

Leisure World celebrated its 50th anniversary in September 2016. The occasion marked a milestone, recognizing the enduring value and beauty of our community along with the invaluable role residents have played over the decades in creating its culture.

Residents govern Leisure World and volunteer throughout the community. Our library, computer center, community foundation, and more than 90 clubs and organizations, including a network of book clubs, are run by residents. Clubs such as Hispanos de Leisure World, Leisure World Association for African American Culture, Chinese Club and Friends of India Association illustrate the community’s diversity and provide an opportunity for residents to celebrate, honor and share their cultural heritage with others.
